Excavating land is much more than simply digging up the ground and removing obstacles before a project, and one thing it most definitely is, or should be, is erosion control.
We are J & A Excavation, and in this article, we will tell you why erosion control is important when excavating land, and what steps should be taken for it to be done properly. Call us for all of your excavation jobs, from driveway excavation, pond excavation, building site excavation, and building pads.
What is erosion control?
The definition of erosion control is fairly obvious from the two-word phrase: it is preparing a plot of land, or a site, so that the soil can support the structure planned and will remain stable throughout its life. It is controlling erosion, or the wearing away of soil, usually caused by moisture seeping into the building site.
Erosion can occur for a variety of reasons. The main cause of erosion is water seeping onto the site and making the soil unstable. Another cause can be improper soil on the site, and still another cause is the surrounding soil conditions which border the site to be excavated.
Let’s look a little deeper into this erosion problem.
How is erosion control performed?
The main way to prevent water damage i.e. erosion, is to install a drainage system under the site. Excess water will then drain into the drainage pipes and flow away from the construction site.
But, there are other ways to achieve it, by themselves or in conjunction with a drainage system. Filling in the site with soils which drain better is one way. Adding gravel is another. And still another is to plant as much vegetation as possible around the building site. A root system is an excellent erosion control system, allowing Mother Nature to do her thing. And, finally, a terraced approach to the surrounding landscape will help prevent major erosion over time.
How to find the best excavation services?
Now that you know how it is done, the question becomes who you should have do it? Any major excavating job will require heavy machinery to excavate large amounts of dirt and rock. This rules out most homeowners. This means, of course, that you will have to hire an excavation professional to handle the job for you, and that means doing your homework in determining who is qualified for the job.
Ask around. Ask for references. Talk to people who have had erosion control done for them. It will not take long for the same three or four excavating services to climb to the top of the list. Once you have those three names, interview them, get a feel for them, and choose the one who makes a bid you can afford and who meshes best with your personality.
