And what does the pond cleanout entail?
Pond cleanout and pond maintenance involves a bit more than waving a long-handled net over the surface of the water. A pond is, in a very real sense, a living organism, and as such it has living organisms in it which must be addressed in order to keep the pond functioning properly. With that in mind, pond cleanout involves the following steps, once building a pond is completed.
Removal of any fish in the pond
Obviously, if there are any fish in the pond, they must be removed, because draining the pond of water is the very next step. This step is taken with nets, and the fish are immediately put into a holding container containing fresh water and a food source.
Draining the pond
Using a large hose and a capable pump, all water is pumped from the pond. That water is diverted to another part of the property where it can run off properly without causing any erosion to nearby plants or structures.
Trimming back, or removal of, vegetation
As a living organism, the pond will have vegetation in it. Some will have been planted in the pond upon construction. Some will be a result of the natural organic processes which occur in water exposed to the sunshine and other elements in the atmosphere.
Cleaning of the sides and bottom
Once drained, the pond’s sides and bottom are scrubbed clean, bringing it back to its original state. No harmful chemicals are used during this process. The key is to keep the entire cleaning process as natural as is humanly possible.
Cleaning of the filters and drainage ports
Without clean filters and drainage port, future cleanings will be increasingly difficult to achieve. This is the perfect time to clean them of any growth or obstructions.
Check mechanical features to make sure they are working properly
Once everything is cleaned, everything is then tested to make sure they are working the way they were manufactured to work. The pump, which is the heart of any healthy pond, is tested and re-tested, and any repairs needed are then done.
Refill the pond
With everything cleaned and everything in working order, it is then time to refill the pond with clean water. Once filled, the pond water is then tested to make sure it has the proper levels of nutrients to ensure a healthy environment for the fish and any animals which may use the pond.
Replace the fish
The fish are taken from their temporary holding tank and gently returned to their pond home.
Set up a cleaning schedule
And then, and this is important for anyone hoping to have a fully-functioning, healthy pond long into the future, a cleaning and maintenance schedule is established far into the future.
