What is pad construction?
The “pad” is the area where all future construction will occur. It is the earthen area upon which the cement foundation will be poured. It is, quite frankly, a vital part of any construction process, and if it is not done properly, well, the result may well be something akin to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which leans today because its building pad was not constructed properly so many years ago.
Pad construction begins, then, with the soil.
How is pad construction done?
The type of soil you are building upon, and the stability of that soil, will determine how stable your building will be. It is the difference between a solid foundation and one with cracks in it.
Different soils can handle massive weights differently. Determining the type of soil, then, is the first step in pad construction. Once the soil has been analyzed, a determination can be made whether to add a different soil to the mix, thus making it more stable.
Drainage must also be considered, and the slope of the adjoining land. Too much water will weaken any construction, so excess water must be channeled away from the site.
After all of that is determined, and the drainage situation is rectified, it will then be time to grade the site, ground clearing, and prepare it for the actual foundation to be laid. Naturally, if any pipes must be laid, this will be the time to do that, prior to the grading. And special care must be taken not to disturb any existing utility pipes in the immediate area.
Does all construction need a pad? Not necessarily, but we recommend that one be constructed.
How to choose a pad construction company
Which brings us to the crucial question: how to choose from among the many pad construction companies in your area, and the best answer we can give is this: ask for references, follow-up on those references, and visit former construction sites to see for yourself what their work looks like, up close and personal.
Word will spread quickly, in any area, concerning good construction work and poor construction work. Recommendations will be easy to come by. The cream does rise to the top in the construction industry, so ask around for recommendations.
Is this a tedious process, this asking around and following up on recommendations? Yes, but it is worth it to avoid having a building look like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
