What do you know about grading and excavation? If you are the average homeowner wannabe, you know practically nothing. If you are a contractor, you know just how important grading and excavating are. Without proper grading and excavation, any building project is doomed from the start, so let’s talk about what proper grading and excavation services look like.
We are J & A Excavation, serving the Greater Fort Worth area. Call us the next time you need the job done right.
What is grading?
Grading is the addition and removal of earthen materials to achieve an even surface to ensure a stable foundation. Grading serves three purposes:
- Reconfigure the land surface to it fits the needs of the future build, while at the same time “fits” with the surrounding streets and neighboring structures, allowing for easy accessibility.
- Establishes new drainage patterns, thus avoiding damp crawlspaces and basements, and preventing future damage to the foundation.
- Builds character and defines the overall aesthetics of the area.
What is excavation?
Simply stated, excavation is digging up the ground to unearth something or create space in the form of a cavity or trench. In construction, we use this term for the process of clearing rocks, soil or other materials from the earth’s surface, using different tools and machines. When constructing something – whether a residential home, commercial building, a bridge, or laying underground pipe – it is critical the structure has a solid, sturdy foundation. For that, we remove the necessary soil and other materials from the property and create a hole. This first step creates the “base” or “sub-base” for that foundation. This is where excavation comes in.
Hiring the best if you want the best
There are some construction companies who will want to cut costs on grading and excavation in order to come under the job bid. We believe this is a dangerous path to follow. A home or commercial building weighs, literally, thousands and thousands of pounds. That kind of weight naturally affects the soil which is supporting it. If the soil is not properly prepared, the building will, eventually, show damage, and all of that work will have been for nothing.
It is our professional opinion, then, if you want the best job done, hire the best grading and excavation company possible. Ask for references, and follow up on those references. If the building is important to you, it is worth paying to have it done correctly.
