What is demolition and excavation?
It is common for one company to offer both demolition and excavation services. If you aren’t sure what the difference is, you aren’t alone. Not only do many people confuse the two jobs, but many fail to recognize the different tasks that can fall under each classification, and the importance of each. Here we will provide some information about each so you’ll be able to better understand when it comes time to hire a demolition and excavation company.
A brief definition of demolition and excavation:
- Demolition – Demolition generally refers to the removal of a building in preparation for rebuilding or otherwise using the site on which the building is located. It can also refer to removing portions of a building, such as during a renovation. A company that handles demolition & excavation typically handles only building demolition, from houses and one- or two-story buildings up through large projects. Demolition also refers to land clearing, in general the removal of anything which stands in the way of a new building project.
- Excavation – While excavation often involves moving earth around and creating a hole or cavity, a demolition & excavation company often does much, much more than that. They may do tunneling work; they may create wall shafts; they may work on projects building underground structures, land clearing, and trenching. These skills are useful for a variety of project types, including construction, mining, exploration, and more. Excavating services can also include soil preparation, building pads, and other important steps which prepare a site for future building.
Finding a company to do both well
You have two options if you are hiring out for demolition and excavation: you can hire two separate companies, one for excavating and one for demolition, or you can hire one company which does both. It is our professional opinion that hiring one company to do both is preferable. The lines of communication are much better when working with one company rather than two, and there is less chance of misunderstandings and blunders which can set a job back many days or weeks.
The trick, however, is in finding a company which can do both well.
Finding such a company
Our suggestion: ask around. Talk to people who have recently had demolition and excavation jobs done for them. Ask them who they hired and ask about the quality of the work performed. You can also tap into the Better Business Bureau for this information.
Ask for references when you obtain bids, and follow up on those references by making the calls. You are going to spend thousands of dollars for this work to be done; for that cost, you deserve the best, and doing your due diligence, by checking on references, is crucial if you are going to get quality work done at a premium cost.
Finding the best takes time. It takes effort. But it is important that you don’t take shortcuts in this process. The final product will reflect the time you took to do things correctly every step of the process.
