What is erosion control?
Erosion of an area occurs when water or wind moves over that area, creating force and shifting the soil. This is definitely not something you want to happen in a construction site, no matter what it is you are constructing. Imagine constructing a garage, only to have the foundation of that garage start cracking and shifting within a couple of years. The only solution, at that point, is to tear down and build again, when the whole matter would have been avoided with proper erosion control before excavating.
Erosion control, then, is the prevention of those forces, wind and water, from creating damage to the soil and thus jeopardizing the construction site.
Proper steps for erosion control: How is that accomplished?
Erosion control requires a series of steps be taken to stabilize the soil. The first step is to take soil samples to determine what kind of “strength” your existing soil has. Proper measurements need to be taken, slope needs to be determined, and proper soils need to be brought in for stabilization.
Once the site is excavated, a drainage system will be installed, usually using piping and, in some instances, pumps. Vegetation is usually also introduced in the area so that the root systems will help in stabilizing the construction are.
And please, do not be fooled into thinking this is just for large construction projects. Erosion control needs to be property done for simple driveway construction or the simple construction of a backyard shed. If it is not done, it is not a matter of if erosion will occur, but when it will occur. Mother Nature does not take a vacation. The forces of wind and water are always in play.
Finding the right excavating company for your project.
Can you do erosion control on your own backyard projects? Certainly, if you do enough research and the job is not too large. However, for most projects, especially those which will require a permit from the local government, you will need to hire erosion control experts.
Finding those experts is a matter of footwork on your part. You will need to call around, get recommendations, talk to the companies recommended to you, ask for references, follow up on those references, and finally make an informed decision. Yes, this process can be tedious, but so can demolishing a structure be tedious because proper erosion control was not performed.
This is a classic case of spend now or spend a lot more later.
