Projects which will require residential excavation
As a homeowner, you know that there are always projects to be done. Many are small, but a handful of large ones are always hovering on the periphery of life, waiting for the funds and the willpower to tackle. Just some of those large projects would be:
- New building
- Digging ponds
- Addition to the existing home
- Installation of a swimming pool
- Removing a septic tank
- Grading your yard for landscaping
- driveway excavation
- Building pads
Any of these jobs will require the expertise, and the proper equipment, used by a professional excavation services. As we mention a little later in the article yes, most of these things could be done by the homeowner, but when dealing with city governments, the zoning laws, and the permit process, hiring a professional really is the intelligent and safe decision.
The residential excavation process
Residential excavation is more than just bringing in a backhoe and digging a hole in the ground. The exaction process includes the following:
- Preparing the site: checking for underground wires and pipes, clearing vegetation and debris, removing tree trunks and other impediments.
- Marking the excavation area: making final measurements, making sure all is prepared for the actual excavation.
- Excavating: digging the hole, testing soil stabilization, look for drainage issues and address those issues before proceeding.
- Land grading: fill in holes left by removed stumps and other structures, leveling the land, providing for proper drainage, and grading for storm water management.
- Compact testing: making sure the soil is firm enough to handle any new structure, and stable enough to withstand the test of time and heavy use. Fill in when needed for proper erosion control.
Can you do it yourself?
We hear this question often and, at the risk of sounding self-serving, our answer is always yes, you can do it, but in almost every instance you probably shouldn’t.
What we described above, the residential excavation process, is a job for professionals, and it is a job which requires heavy machinery which should be operated by trained pros. Yes, you can learn the basics on YouTube. Everyone is a professional, or so the myth goes, because of YouTube, but we are talking about potentially-dangerous jobs which require skill, the type of skill honed after hundreds of hours of training and on-site experience.
In addition, following, to the letter, the zoning laws and the permit laws requires a precision which most homeowners simply do not have. Weekend warriors may have the desire, but they do not have the expertise to make that desire a reality.
Or, as our granddaddy was fond of saying, just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should do something of this magnitude.
Bite the proverbial bullet and hire a professional residential excavating service.
